Damp Proofing

Damp-proofing treatment for rising damp, recommended only once a survey has confirmed it is genuinely needed.

"Rising damp" is one of the most over-diagnosed problems in older homes. A tide mark, flaking paint or crumbling plaster can just as easily be condensation, a leak or penetrating damp from outside — treating the wrong one wastes money without fixing anything.

We only recommend damp-proofing once a survey has confirmed that ground moisture rising through the masonry is the genuine cause, typically where the damp-proof course has failed, is missing, or has been bridged by raised soil, render or a path.

When this service may help

  • A tide mark along the base of an outside wall, usually below about a metre
  • Flaking paint, bulging plaster or white salt deposits at skirting height
  • Rotting skirting boards with no obvious leak nearby
  • An older property with no visible damp-proof course
  • A survey has already confirmed rising damp

What we look at / do

  • Confirm rising damp rather than condensation or a leak
  • Condition of the existing damp-proof course, where present
  • External ground levels, paths and render that may be bridging it
  • Extent of affected plaster and skirting
  • The right damp-proofing system for the wall construction

How the service works

  1. 1

    Confirm the cause

We check the wall is genuinely affected by rising damp before recommending treatment.

  2. 2

    Agree the scope

We set out the height of plaster to be removed and the damp-proofing system to be used.

  3. 3

    Carry out the work

We repair or renew the damp-proof course and remove the affected plaster.

  4. 4

    Make good

We replaster to an appropriate specification and advise on redecoration timing.

What's included

  • Confirmation of rising damp before any work begins
  • Damp-proof course repair or renewal
  • Removal of affected plaster to the agreed height
  • Replastering with an appropriate damp-proofing system
  • Advice on ground levels and bridging that can cause recurrence

What you'll receive

  • Written confirmation of the cause before work begins
  • An agreed scope of damp-proofing work
  • Damp-proof course repair or renewal and replastering
  • Advice on ground levels or bridging to prevent recurrence

Important to know

Damp-proofed plaster needs time to dry out fully before redecoration, which can take several weeks depending on the wall. We will never recommend this work where the evidence instead points to condensation or a leak.

What happens next

If a survey has already confirmed rising damp, send us the report and we will quote the damp-proofing work. If you are not sure yet, book a Damp & Mould Survey first so the cause is confirmed.

Common questions

A proper survey considers the height, pattern and location of the damp alongside the construction — not a single moisture-meter reading. We confirm this before recommending any damp-proofing.

It varies with wall thickness and ventilation, but several weeks is typical before final decoration.

No — we confirm the cause first, either from your own recent survey or one of our own, so the work genuinely addresses the problem.
